WARM WELCOME
By looking at mathematics with my eyes as a physicist, I do not only see abstract formulas and concepts but also a very powerful notation to describe nature. Though formal and abstract, it is very efficient for capturing relationships in nature and discovering new ones.
By looking at biostatistics, I do not only see a bunch of numbers and information to be analysed, but always also the entire ethical context underlying a given study.
Based on my didactical training and experience, I enjoy to pass on my mathematical and scientific knowledge in an understandable yet professional manner to my clients in the form of statistical support during clinical studies, public seminars and public or personal tutoring in mathematics and physics.
I am looking forward to hearing from you – do not hesitate to contact me!

Statistical Analysis, Seminars and Tutoring
As a freelance I offer statistical support during clinical studies, mathematical and statistical seminars, advanced training and tutoring. The wishes and needs of my clients and my professional and timely support from start to finish are of outmost importance to me.
If you are interested in one of my offers, you will find detailed information below.
ABOUT ME
As a physicist, I see two aspects in mathematics: a systematic one of formulas, calculations and numbers, and a creative one. In biostatistics, the latter mainly comes to play in finding suitable methods for evaluation – quantitative and qualitative – as well as in the presentation and communication of the results. The combination of both aspects – systematic and creative – makes it possible to obtain statistically significant results for a given question or for existing data and thus to gain new knowledge.
As a biostatistician, in the data to be analyzed I do not only see a bunch of numbers and hidden information, but, I always also perceive it in its ethical context. It makes me happy to contribute with my knowledge and skills to improving the situation of ill people and animals (veterinary medicine).
Based on my didactical training and experience, I enjoy to pass on my mathematical knowledge and scientific understanding to my clients in an understandable yet professional manner.
Education
- 1990-1995 Studies in Physics: Driven by curiosity and the longing for understanding relationships in nature, I studied physics at the ETH in Zurich (Switzerland).
- 1996-2000 Thesis: Practical implementation of the knowledge acquired during my studies in the form of a doctoral thesis in experimental physics at the Institute for Solid State Physics at the ETH in Zurich.
- 2002-2005 Didactical Training: Because I not only enjoy understanding relationships in nature by myself, but also passing it on to others, I graduated in didactical training in physics at the ETH in Zurich. At that time, I started lecturing mathematics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Zurich (today ZHAW) and personal tutoring in mathematics and physics at middle school and university level.
- 2021-2022 CAS in Applied Statistics: To refresh and deepen my statistical knowledge and skills, I attended lectures as part of the CAS in Applied Statistics at ETH Zurich.
Professional Path
- Since 2021: Working as a freelance biostatistician as part of my sole proprietorship SMP-Kaufmann (www.biostatistics.ch).
- 2002-2020: Teaching mathematics at the ZHAW (at that time called Zurich University of Applied Sciences) as well as tutoring at university, middle school and elementary school level.
- 2000-2002: Research assistant at UCLA (University of California Los Angeles, USA) in the Department of Solid State Physics.
- 1996-200: Thesis in experimental physics at the Institute of Solid State Physics at the ETH in Zurich.
Personal Background
I am born in 1969 and grown up in the city of Lucerne (Switzerland). Since my studies of physics at the ETH in Zurich and after returning from Los Angeles, I live with my family (two daughters, born in 2004 and 2006) in the area of Zurich.
Philosophy of Life
While my understanding of the external world is shaped by the laws of physics, my view of the internal, mental world is based on Buddhist philosophy. I see clear parallels between the two disciplines not only in the laws they formulate, but also in their shared methodology of critical and systematic analysis of observations and experiences. Support for Clinical Studies
To help you understand, calssify and apply the statistical aspects of your research correctly, I offer you my full support.
1. Consulting
I strive to ensure that my clients understand the statistical aspects of their research projects, or at least grasp their complexity and become able to classify them according to their own understanding. For this reason, explanation of the statistical aspects according to the given understanding of my clients and continuous support from start to end are of great importance to me. Consultations can take place by e-mail, telephone calls, zoom meetings or in personal meetings.
2. Evaluations
To enable my clients to correctly understand and classify the generated results in the full context of their study, I use – whenever possible – multidimensional analytical approaches:
- visualization (histograms, box plots, scatter plots, interaction plots, etc.) to get a “picture” about the given situation as well as to improve understanding of performed numerical analysis
- numerical descriptive statistics (suitable statistics like mean values with standard deviation, medians with IQR etc.) for numerical data compression
- explorative or confirmative analysis (if possible/meaningful/specified) based on appropriate statistical methods (statistical tests, regression, factor analysis, etc.).
3. Protocols
The results of the analysis are sent to my clients in the form of complete and detailed reports (pdf and/or html format). They include:
- Definition of the methods and data of the original data set and of those used in the evaluation: This ensures complete tracking of the applied methods and data used for the calculations.
- Explanations of the methods: I strive to ensure that my clients will have a good understanding of the results obtained and can classify them correctly in the overall context of their study. Therefore I always aim to explain the applied methods according to the basic uderstanding and needs of my clients.
- Analysis report / overview of the analyses carried out and the statistical results obtained (numerical and graphical): The complete results are professionally presented in the report in a clear yet easy-to-understand manner. This should help my clients to efficiently integrate the results into possible further processes of their study.

REFERENCES
Here, you find feedback from some of my clients about our collaboration and experience:
«Evelyne Kaufmann is a highly competent and reliable biostatistician whom I wholeheartedly recommend. She demonstrated an excellent understanding of our complex field of ophthalmology and expertly guided our study from design to analysis. Personally, I learned a great deal on this journey and thoroughly enjoyed working with her – thank you for that!»
City Hospital Zurich Triemli, September 23, 2024
«I have collaborated with Evelyne Kaufmann as a biostatistician on several projects. Communication and overall collaboration were always very friendly, competent, and prompt, with the requested tasks being completed in a timely, meticulous, and comprehensible manner.
Her support extended beyond pure data analysis into the publication process: tables and plots were prepared in a publication-ready format based on existing paper drafts, and her feedback on statistical reviews was always highly dedicated, timely, and professional.
Evelyne Kaufmann has consistently provided competent and prompt support throughout all my projects, going beyond data analysis to the final publication. I found this continuous support extremely valuable.»
